The City of Salinas - Minas Gerais

Located in the North of Minas Gerais in the physiographic region of the Chapadão de Itacambira in the Jequitinhonha Valley, the Micro Region of Alto Rio Pardo, SUDENE and CODEVALE coverage area, Salinas is the best place in the country for the production of cachaça. The climate and the soil are the most favorable to the production of sugar cane. The cachaças from the Meia Lua and Beleza de Minas groups are produced on the Meia Lua farm on the riverbank of Jucurutu which has excellent water quality. Besides all these factors, the cachaça is made by the best professionals in the market and undergoes through quality control. The recognition is the result of dedication and organization, from the planting of sugar cane without pesticides to the bottling and also of the perfect timing the beverage needs to rest to achieve its high quality. Salinas is the land of what is considered the best cachaça in the world. It was in Salinas that Anísio Santiago (1912-2002) produced the cachaça Havana by the year of 1946. The city lies in the north of Minas Gerais and even today it is still known for producing handcrafted drink.

This was the place chosen to host the Cachaça Museum, which opened on December 20th, 2012.It was constructed in a 13 000 m2 area; at the present time, it houses about 1700 labels of cachaça. It was invested R $ 4.5 million on the museum funded by the State Government; the museum offers free admission.

The project has six years and began with a research by the teachers of UFMG ( Federal University of Minas Gerais). The architecture was based on this research and tries to show the beverage production line. There are nine rooms: they represent the plantation and the milling of the sugar cane; the historic role of slaves in the production of the cachaça; the operation of the mills and distilleries; and the aging in barrels..

The product was chosen to represent the region culturally. According to Leonardo Bahia, superintendent of Minas Gerais Museums and Arts State Secretariat of Culture, a drink made in Salinas is "very much Brazilian."
At the Museum, recipes using cachaça also have a place. An interactive screen gives access to a database of Minas cuisine and visitors can feed it with new information. The Secretariat emphasizes the economic importance of cachaça to Minas needy community and argues that the goal of the museum is to include the whole society in the production process. The place will be used as a cultural complex and it will have a stage for concerts, a kitchen for cooking classes, a furnace for firing pottery and many cultural activities that point out the dangers of alcohol abuse.
